ENVI Statistics Preview.

At a glance

Purpose The statistics ENVI computes for a raster image: per band the minimum, maximum, mean and standard deviation, optionally a histogram per band and a covariance block with eigenvectors and eigenvalues.

How much Poka reads

B3 Core. Only the main content type or types are decoded (for example geometry but not materials, layers or annotations, or only one version family). The list of gaps is substantial.

Confidence: medium (the reviewer read the code). Basis: Assessed 2026-10-21 by the parser's author, not yet reviewed independently: parsers/poka-sta/src/lib.rs, its 20 unit tests (built from the NV5 specification) and tests/samples.rs over the one corpus sample, envistat.sta from GDAL's autotest data (double precision, big-endian, 6 bands, no histograms, no covariance). The single-precision and little-endian layouts are pinned by unit tests only.

What Poka does not read

  • per-band histograms are not decoded; only their byte offsets are shown
  • the covariance matrix, eigenvectors and eigenvalues are not decoded; only the block's offset is shown
  • wavelength units are not shown: they are not stored in the .sta file
  • only the first 4,096 bands are listed

Background

A binary file written beside an ENVI image, big-endian unless its signature is byte-swapped. Its signature says which layout it is: 1095584078 ("AMIN") stores the statistics as doubles, 1111838282 ("BENJ") as floats. A name string holds the source file and ROI names, and in newer files a [b] part that marks double-precision histogram bounds. The .sta extension is also used by unrelated formats; Poka routes it to the ENVI reader, which refuses a file without an ENVI signature.

Versions

Version Identifier Poka Note
Newer layout, double-precision statistics signature 1095584078 ("AMIN") Partly read Header, name string, wavelengths and statistics are read and checked against the corpus sample; histograms and covariance are not.
Older layout, single-precision statistics signature 1111838282 ("BENJ") Partly read Read per the specification; no corpus sample, so only unit tests built from the spec cover it.
