How much Poka reads
B4 Summary. The container and metadata are read and summarised (counts, properties, structure), but the main content is not rendered.
Confidence: high (the reviewer read the code and a test that proves the claim). Basis: Reviewed 2026-10-16: parsers/poka-mtr/src/lib.rs, tests/samples.rs; 16 corpus .mtr files (EnergyPlus 25.1/26.x, several truncated at about 200 KB, one of 20 MB and one of 10 MB). The data dictionary is decoded fully, and every data line is read only to accumulate record count, total and peak per meter. Output is the poka-table-viewer table of one row per meter.
What Poka does not read
- The time series itself (values by timestep, hour, day, month) is not shown
- No date or time per value, and no split by environment (design days versus run period); totals mix all environments
- Monthly, daily and run-period statistics (per-period min, max, day, hour) are ignored; only the first value on each line is used
- Cumulative (running total) meters are flagged in the parser but still summed into Total
- Reserved date/time records are read only for environment titles, which are not displayed
Background
The EnergyPlus documentation says the MTR holds only the report meter requests, in the same format as the main output (ESO): a data dictionary ending with "End of Data Dictionary", then data lines keyed by id. A meter has no key value, so its dictionary line has one comma fewer than a variable's. Poka reads the dictionary and the data, shows each meter's record count, total and peak rather than the series, and splits each meter name into its parts (resource, scope and so on).
