DOE-2 BDL Building Model Preview.

At a glance

Purpose The DOE-2 BDL processor listing: the program's account of reading a building description, with every input line echoed and its warnings placed where they arose.
Extensions .bdl
Poka parser poka-bdl
Viewer poka-tree-viewer
Depth tier Parser with a shared viewer (see Depth tiers)
Breadth tier B3 Core (see Breadth tiers)

How much Poka reads

B3 Core. Only the main content type or types are decoded (for example geometry but not materials, layers or annotations, or only one version family). The list of gaps is substantial.

Confidence: medium (the reviewer read the code). Basis: Reviewed 2026-10-16: poka-bdl src/lib.rs (parse_listing, build_ast, 20+ unit tests), main.rs, tests/geometry.rs, tests/samples.rs, plus the shared grammar and 3D placement in poka-bdl-common (lib.rs, geometry.rs); corpus kinect-project_openfloorstory.bdl (3,186 lines) and web-cubo_gt_electrica.bdl (1,799 lines), the latter a DOE-2.2 listing with 24 library entries. Covers the DOE-2 BDL processor listing only (not .inp). Read: the diagnostics with line mapping, run banner, standard-library objects, a model census by command (counts only) and a 3D view of floors, spaces, walls, windows and doors.

What Poka does not read

  • the processor's computed report tables in the listing (for example the REPORT LV-K weighting factor summary and the V0/V1/W1 coefficient tables) are not decoded
  • object properties are not shown: the Model branch lists only command names and counts, with no per-object tree
  • constructions, materials, schedules, curves, HVAC systems, equipment, utility and cost data are not shown beyond counts
  • only the first 20 occurrences of each message and 200 message kinds are listed
  • objects with no drawable placement are counted as not drawn in 3D
  • building or site orientation beyond azimuth placement, and zone and space properties (areas, volumes, loads)

Background

DOE-2 is a building energy simulation program; its site offers DOE-2.1E, DOE-2.2 and DOE-2.3, and eQUEST is built on DOE-2.2. Its input is written in the Building Description Language (BDL). A .bdl listing is not a second input format: it repeats the input with each line's number in the original .inp file, interleaved with the processor's cautions and errors. Poka recovers that line mapping, so each diagnostic points at an input line, and draws the building's placed surfaces in 3D beside the tree.
