How much Poka reads
B3 Core. Only the main content type or types are decoded (for example geometry but not materials, layers or annotations, or only one version family). The list of gaps is substantial.
Confidence: high (the reviewer read the code and a test that proves the claim). Basis: Reviewed 2026-10-16: parsers/poka-kmz/src/lib.rs (zip handling, doc.kml or first .kml selection, case-insensitive relative image lookup, size budgets) over the shared poka-kml reader, its unit tests, and tests/samples.rs over 2 corpus KMZ files (testKMZ.kmz, kmlimage.kmz GDAL overlay pyramid). Same 2D geometry and overlay coverage as KML plus PNG and JPEG overlay images taken from the archive; KML 2.2 inside ZIP only.
What Poka does not read
- All KML gaps apply: no placemark names, styles, icons, altitude, tracks, NetworkLink, ScreenOverlay or PhotoOverlay
- Only one KML entry (doc.kml or the first .kml) is read; other KML files in the archive are not followed
- 3D models and textures in the archive are not drawn
- Icons and other archive resources besides overlay PNG and JPEG images are not used
- Remote overlay images are never fetched and are drawn as outlines, as are GIF or other image types
- Overlay images over 32 MB each or 96 MB in total are drawn as outlines
- Archive read cap 128 MB; KML entry cap 32 MB
Background
The Library of Congress describes KMZ as ZIP-compressed KML whose structure is defined in Annex C of the OGC KML specification. A KMZ may also hold COLLADA models, overlays, sounds and textures. Poka unzips the archive and hands the KML to the same reader as poka-kml. Overlay images are looked up in the archive relative to the KML entry, case-insensitively if no exact match exists. Remote URLs are not fetched; those overlays, and images that are not PNG or JPEG or exceed the size budget, are drawn as outlines.
Versions
| Version | Identifier | Poka | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| KMZ (OGC KML 2.2, Annex C) | Partly read | As for KML, plus PNG and JPEG overlays from the archive. |
